Présentation

En 1921, à l'initiative de Mgr. Paulin LADEUZE (1870-1940), Recteur de l'Université de Louvain, les orientalistes de Belgique ont créé la "Société Belge d'Études Orientales", qui a eu comme premier Président l'indianiste Louis DE LA VALLÉE POUSSIN (1869-1938) et comme premier Vice-président l'égyptologue Jean CAPART (1877-1947). Il s’agissait de donner aux orientalistes belges le moyen de promouvoir leurs sciences mais aussi de se rencontrer et d'échanger les fruits de leurs recherches.

À la présidence, se sont ensuite succédé l'historien et égyptologue Jacques PIRENNE (1891-1972), l'islamologue Armand ABEL (1903-1973), l'égyptologue Aristide THÉODORIDÈS (1911-1994) et, depuis 1995, l'égyptologue Christian CANNUYER, assisté de deux Vice-présidents, le bibliste Antoon SCHOORS et le hittitologue René LEBRUN.

In 1921 werd op initiatief van Mgr. Paulin LADEUZE (1870-1940), rector van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, het "Belgisch Genootschap voor Oosterse Studiën" opgericht door de oriëntalisten van België, met als voorzitter de indianist Louis DE LA VALLEE POUSSIN (1869-1938) en als ondervoorzitter de egyptoloog Jean CAPART (1877-1947). Doel was de Belgische oriëntalisten in staat te stellen hun wetenschap te bevorderen maar ook elkaar te ontmoeten en de resultaten van hun onderzoek uit te wisselen.

De volgende voorzitters waren de historicus en egyptoloog Jacques PIRENNE (1891-1972), de islamoloog Armand ABEL (1903-1973), de egyptoloog Aristide THÉODORIDÈS (1911-1994) en, sinds 1995 de egyptoloog Christian CANNUYER, bijgestaan door twee ondervoorzitters, de biblist Antoon SCHOORS en de hettitoloog René LEBRUN.

Introduction

In 1921, Mgr. Paulin LADEUZE (1870-1940), rector of the University of Louvain, invited the Orientalists of Belgium to create the "Belgian Society of Oriental Studies" whom the Indianist Louis DE LA VALLÉE POUSSIN (1869-1938) was its first President and the Egyptologist Jean CAPART (1877-1947) as its first Vice-President. The aim was to offer to the Belgian Orientalists the means and the opportunity to promote their knowledge and also to meet and exchange the results of their research.

The following accomplished individuals have assumed the presidency afterwards: Historian and Egyptologist Jacques PIRENNE (1891-1972), Islamologist Armand ABEL (1903-1973), Egyptologist Aristide THÉODORIDÈS (1911-1994), and since 1995 the Egyptologist Christian CANNUYER assisted by two Vice-Presidents: the Biblist Antoon SCHOORS and the Hittitologist René LEBRUN.
